She then went on to oversee a group of high school athletes during a summer camp experience. In addition to participating as an events volunteer with the San Antonio Road Runners and Purnell Racing, she also serves as the Assistant Race Director for the Milsa Mile, a community event and fundraiser created by Amber and her mother, Olympic runner Liza Hunter Galvan, benefiting the Alamo Head Injury Association. This event is very important to Amber because of a serious head injury she herself experienced as a child. When she was just 11 years old, Amber was involved in a car accident that left her in a coma for three and a half weeks. However, Amber’s strength, courage, and faith helped her overcome the challenges of a difficult rehabilitation, and now nothing can slow her down.
Amber is thrilled to be the Grand Marshall of the Fiesta Especial Parade, and a role model to all the children and adults with disabilities attending the event. “My favorite aspect of Fiesta is that we all come close towards each other,” she said of the diverse, city-wide celebration. “I’m excited [to be Grand Marshall] because I’m happy I’m out there supporting others. . .it is very important to advocate for a child with disabilities because you need to learn about that child and what it is they face. . .if they ever get lost somewhere or with something - help them.”
Indeed, her involvement in the 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run, and her role as Grand Marshall will help bring inspiration and advocacy to many people as she leads the way for this very special parade.
